Member Spotlight: City of Newberg

(NEWBERG, OR) – The City of Newberg is a proud partner with Columbia Willamette Clean Cities Coalition. Newberg is a prosperous and diverse community situated at the upper end of the Willamette Valley. Newberg boasts flourishing industries in winemaking, dental equipment manufacturing, and agriculture. The City of Newberg’s staff of roughly 150 employees serves a rapidly growing population of over 25,000 residents as of 2022 census data.

As Newberg’s population grows, a move toward more energy-efficient equipment has become a focus of departments with fleet vehicles. With the assistance of Columbia Willamette Clean Cities Coalition, Newberg’s Public Works department was able to secure a grant funding the acquisition of a new all-electric street sweeper from Bucher to replace aging diesel-powered equipment.

The City of Newberg held a contest in the Summer of 2024 to name the electric street sweeper and outfitted the vehicle with a custom wrap. Many cities, counties, and other agencies have launched similar contests to engage the community in work that normally goes on in the public eye. Oregon City recently introduced their newest street sweeper, “C-sweep-io”, after launching a similar contest, and the success of this effort encouraged the City of Newberg to do the same.

The community voted to bestow the name “Sweeping Beauty” on the street sweeper. The vehicle has since been adorned with its new name, which was unveiled at Public Works Day, and attracts attention everywhere it goes in town, making Newberg’s Public Works team’s service and commitment to clean energy visible.

Moving forward, the City of Newberg will seek opportunities to enhance fleet equipment and infrastructure wherever it is needed, and this is made possible in part by partner organizations that work to help obtain grant funding needed to make these vital improvements. The city strives to meet local and state environmental goals, and grant funding ensures the ability to meet these goals while still providing essential services to the community. Other environmental vehicle and equipment improvements include the addition of electric trucks and environmental infrastructure investments like plans to add electric vehicle charging stations on some city property.
